The Technology of Trust

Trust is a required element of all human interaction throughout human interaction, whether physical or virtual. At its root, it implies the ability to rely on a specific outcome. In the physical world, this means that when we enter into contracts or when we shake someone’s hand, people will follow what they have agreed to; and when we call the police or fire department, help will come in response to the disembodied voice.

The same levels of trust apply when we download an application to our smartphone, buy a movie from an online service or glance at personaized advertisements on a mobile phone. More importantly, as we migrate our medical records to the Internet, allow our ourdata to be used to provide personalized services such as video recommendations or electricity rates, we trust that the entities involved will handle this sensitive data in our best interests. Given the distributed and often anonymous nature of the Internet, gaining this trust requires a new breed of technology to provide a concrete “layer” that can affirm these expectations are met. Intertrust’s inventions are uniquely positioned to do just that.
