Open-access, interoperable consumer electronics DRM platform specifications
to drive market adoption by service, device and content providers
Sunnyvale, CA,
October 3, 2005 – The
Marlin Joint Development Association (JDA), a consumer
electronics industry technology development alliance
formed by Intertrust Technologies, Matsushita Electric
Industrial (Panasonic), Royal Philips Electronics,
Samsung Electronics, and Sony Corporation to create
specifications for an open standard interoperable
Digital Rights Management (DRM) platform for consumer
electronics, today announced the creation of the
Marlin Developer Community (MDC). The MDC will be
a technology standards-setting and promotion organization
that provides software and hardware developers access
to the Marlin DRM specifications. The Marlin DRM
platform is designed for devices like mobile phones,
set top boxes, computers and portable and stationary
CE devices.
Launched in January 2005, the Marlin
JDA's primary goal was to create an openly accessible
set of DRM platform specifications for all types
of consumer electronics devices and services for
the mobile, broadcast and broadband markets, and
then turn itself into a market-facing entity that
provides access to prospective Marlin adopters. The
MDC is open to any individual or party to access
the specifications, make input into the development
process, participate in developer conferences and
contribute to or use Marlin reference technologies
in the MDC source program. The MDC will be open for
membership in the near future when the JDA completes
its 1.0 version of the specifications. The Marlin
JDA anticipates that the first Marlin-based devices
and services will enter the market in 2006.
Marlin is the first open DRM platform
developed for CE applications in the mobile, broadcast
and broadband verticals. Marlin mobile profile is
designed to meet all the requirements of a fully
compliant and interoperable OMA v2.0 implementation,
thereby facilitating integration with, and extending
the interoperability of, OMA based systems. It is
a powerful interoperability bridge between CE devices
and delivers a uniform consumer experience across
a wide range of services and devices.
