Preserving Privacy for Genetic Data in the Cloud

Thursday, November 20   10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

W. Knox Carey, Vice President, Technology Initiatives, Intertrust

Given the substantial privacy risks, human genetic data is one of the most sensitive data types to handle online, yet the potential benefits of opening this data to worldwide researchers are substantial. Based on experience in designing a service to do just this, this session will detail the legal and institutional hurdles that need to be overcome to effectively open repositories of genetic data to online access by researchers. We will compare and contrast several examples of how to create a system that can comply with regulatory and institutional requirements yet allow access to genetic data online.

What you’ll takeaway:

  • Understanding of regulatory and institutional frameworks around online release of genetic data
  • Understanding of potential technological approaches
