Schneider Electric Discusses How to Power 5G
In Episode 7 of Tech Lightning Rounds, Beth Kindig interviews energy experts to discuss the transformation of the energy industry catalyzed by technology, including cloud, IoT sensors, data exchanges and data interoperability. Interviews are held in “lightning round” format, which are rapid interviews with tech experts for immediate depth on each topic.
5G is more than a successor to 4G. The new generation requires changes to infrastructure in order to deliver faster speeds and lower latency. In the past, factories and industrial complexes were located close to power sub-stations. The next step involved deploying thousands of systems for power distribution at the edge of power grids. With 5G, the power distribution will require hundreds of thousands or even millions of micro data centers globally. This is the tremendous challenge that Schneider Electric is prepared to tackle.
In this podcast episode, we interview Steve Carlini, Vice President of Innovation for Secure Power Division at Schneider Electric, who discusses the design challenges around 5G micro data centers, including the integration of power, cooling equipment, enclosures for the environment and the latest battery technology.
